Program Description

The University Program in Ecology provides interdisciplinary, scientific training in all aspects of ecology, including both basic and applied studies, ranging from populations and their behavior to synthetic analyses of the Earth as a functional ecological system. The program brings together the broad range of expertise in the environmental sciences found in various departments and schools on the Duke campus. General areas of specialization include studies of community, evolutionary, plant and population ecology; paleoecology; ecosystem analysis and global change. Course offerings include graduate-level core courses in (1) historical foundations in ecology and (2) current ecological research. Students in this program participate in a weekly seminar series and are encouraged to arrange laboratory rotations during their first year of study. Special facilities for study and research include the Duke University Phytotron, the Duke Marine Lab, the Free-Air CO2 Enrichment (FACE) Facility in the Duke Forest, the Duke Wetlands Center, the Duke University Stable Isotope Laboratory, and the Organization for Tropical Studies.
