Program Description

The program features a very advantageous combination of individual attention in small classes and a close connection to the broader community of literature, cultural studies, and cultural history. Besides French and Spanish literatures which have always been the focus, the department offers Romance Studies including Italian and Portuguese/Lusophone. It also encourages interdisciplinary work in programs such as Latin American Studies, the Program in Literature, Medieval and Renaissance Studies and Women's Studies. Areas of specialization in French include all historical fields as well as the emergent literatures of francophone Africa and the Caribbean and Quebec. Areas of specialization in Spanish also include all historical fields as well as Amerindian culture, and Latino/Chicano literatures. Critical methodologies include the relation of literature to society, history, and philosophy, semiotics, feminism, Marxism, psychoanalysis, postcolonial theories, linguistics, and computers in the humanities. Opportunities are also provided to work with visiting writers and translators.

Other Requirements

The submission of a writing sample (nonreturnable, limited to about 10 pages, in the foreign language) is required. Writing sample should be sent directly to the Department of Romance Studies (not the Graduate Admissions Office -- this is the only exception to the general rule that all documents that are part of an application must be sent to the Graduate Admissions Office).
