Summary of Research Day 2002

Research Day

The Second Annual Graduate Student Research Day, held on March 20, 2002, expanded on the success of the first Research Day with an increase in participation and a move from a half-day event to a whole day, featuring both a lunch with a panel discussion and an awards dinner.

The theme of the luncheon panel discussion was "Hybrid Spaces: Scholarship within a Global Community", which addressed the challenge universities face in trying to keep up with the changing landscape of the global community. The discussion centered around the degree to which research in the panel participants' disciplines has become interdisciplinary, and the ways in which seemingly disparate research interests can be united. The panel was composed of the following graduate students and faculty members: Robyn Wiegman, Director, Women's Studies (panel moderator); Diane Nelson, Professor, Cultural Anthropology; Walter Mignolo, Professor, Romance Studies; Kevin Eubanks, Ph.D. candidate in German Studies; David Woodard, Ph.D. candidate in Literature; LaNitra Walker, Ph.D. candidate in Art History.

Both faculty reviewers and student presenters were impressed with GSRD as a venue for sharing research in a more friendly and familiar atmosphere than that of a professional conference, and expressed the hope that more students would both participate as presenters and audience members in coming years.

Watch your email at the beginning of spring semester for news of the Third Annual Graduate Student Research Day, and keep it in mind as you do research and prepare papers this year.
