Setting Expectations in Mentoring and Managing Conflict for Grad Students and Postdocs

Participants will engage in facilitated discussions triggered by short video vignettes. Each vignette, directed and produced at Michigan State University, depicts a potential conflictive situation within graduate education. As options for resolving conflicts are discussed with each vignette, the presenter will link the interest-based strategies to the successful setting of mutually understood expectations as a process to prevent conflicts.

Relations between faculty, students, postdoctoral fellows, and other mentees are often regarded by the mentees as the most important aspect of the quality of their training experiences. Interpersonal conflicts between mentor and menteess are often the result of the lack of mutually understood expectations. This workshop focuses on principles of and steps used in applying the interest-based approach to resolving conflicts and setting explicit expectations.

Karl joined Duke in 2007 from the University of Michigan, where he was director of life sciences communications. He was a newspaper reporter for 15 years and is a former winner of the AAAS science writing award.

Thinking About a Postdoc? What you need to know before you go
The panelists will specifically address the following: Planning ahead and avoiding the pitfalls; different types of postdoctoral fellows and how they are funded; biggest rewards and obstacles to postdoctoral life; how might a career path change during the postdoc; plotting the path to life after the postdoc; and tips for success. Panelists represent the humanities and social sciences, as well as natural and physical sciences.
