General Information

The Duke Student Health Center is supported by the Department of Community and Family Medicine and Student Affairs. The Duke Student Health Clinic, the Travel Clinic, and Office of Health Promotion are located in the Duke Student Health Center on Flowers Drive. Additional sites include the East Campus Wellness Clinic, Student Health Physical Therapy (Card Gym Basement), and Zen Spot on East Campus. Medical services are provided by board-certified faculty physicians and by physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and resident physicians under faculty supervision.

Services Covered by the Health Fee

The health fee covers most of the services at Duke Student Health Center if medically indicated and rendered by a student health provider:

  • Medical care for acute and chronic illness, and minor injuries
  • One health maintenance assessment every two years
  • Annual gynecological examination
  • Many routine laboratory services
  • Allergy shots
  • Confidential HIV and pregnancy testing
  • Cold/flu/allergy self-help table
  • TB skin testing
  • Travel medicine for study abroad or personal travel (vaccines NOT covered)
  • After-hours nurse consultation through UNC HealthLink

The health fee covers a variety of other services at DSHC and other locations:

  • Nurse advice — East Campus Wellness Clinic
  • Nutrition counseling—Student Health Center, East Campus Wellness Center, and Wilson Recreation Center
  • Health promotion programs—in dorms and other campus locations
  • Physical therapy consultation—Card Gym
  • Fitness assessments—Wilson Recreation Center
  • Sports medicine consultation
  • Mental health counseling at Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS)
  • Sexual assault support services  at the Women’s Center

Services NOT Covered by the Health Fee

If you are unsure whether a service is covered, please ask the staff of the Duke SHC business office prior to receiving the service. You are financially responsible for the following:

  • X-rays
  • Medical care provided in the Emergency Department, hospital, or other non-student health facility
  • Care provided by specialist consultants, including those working within the student health facilities, such as dermatology and endocrinology
  • Tests, procedures, or prescriptions not medically indicated, not on the approved list, or not ordered by student health providers
  • Immunizations required for entrance to Duke or other universities or for travel.
  • Contraceptives
  • Dental care
  • Pregnancy care or deliveries
