December 5, 2006: Interdisciplinary Speed Networking

Robert Cook-Deegan

Full Professor, Public Policy Studies, Institute for Genome Sciences & Policy

1. Please briefly describe your research and the way in which it is interdisciplinary. My main research is on how innovation occurs in genomics, including but not restricted to intellectual property as an incentive for private sector innovation. In addition, our center does work more broadly on ethical, legal, and social implications of advances in genomics and in their clinical and other applications.

2. How would you recommend that a student learn more about your research? Talk to Lauren Dame, our Associate Director, or Shubha Chandrasekharan, our postdoc.

3. What kinds of interdisciplinary connections are you interested in making at Duke? We have an NIH grant that involves the Fuqua School, Law School, Medical School, Jenkins Collaboratory, and several Arts & Sciences departments that could be the research domain for graduate work or postdoctoral work (there is a postdoctoral fellowship position embedded in the grant).

4. In what ways can you see a graduate student from another group or discipline fit into what you discussed above? We have a summer research program that involves undergrads and grad/professional students from all parts of the university. We also can support graduate dissertations and projects from a variety of departments and schools.

5. What skills or expertise would help you move forward in your research? Interest in history, law, social policy, political science, genomics.

6. Who are the people at Duke that you collaborate with on interdisciplinary work or have regular discussions about your research?
